My Therapy Modalities

In my practice, I employ several evidence-based practices. Each client has unique needs. Therefore, I do not limit our work to any single therapy modality. Usually, I blend a variety of techniques to create a customized approach for your treatment.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a well-known, evidence-based modality built on the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behavior. I utilize CBT to help clients identify and change distorted thinking and develop more adaptive behaviors.

Humanistic therapy views authenticity and connection as the vehicle for change. There’s a value in speaking to a person truly interested in understanding our experience. It never undervalues honesty in the process of becoming a person.

Modern psychodynamic therapy explores our hidden beliefs and motivations that affect our experience and behavior. The therapeutic relationship becomes a place to explore the complex meaning of our experience and grow by gaining insight into parts of ourselves usually kept hidden.

EMOTIONALLY FOCUSED COUPLES THERAPY (EFT)

EFT uses emotional openness to help repair ruptures and strengthen attachment between couples. This therapy introduces new bonding experiences and strives to identify and replace negative cycles with positive interactions.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a skill that is a durable source of well-being. I work with clients to cultivate mindfulness through exercises that help us attend to and tolerate what arises in the present.

Motivational interviewing

Motivational interviewing helps identify roadblocks in the way of change. I use this modality to help clients resolve uncertainty and commit to positive new behaviors.

INDIVIDUAL THERAPY

I offer one-on-one help using the evidence on what works to help you build a life worth living. I tailor various therapy modalities into a customized approach to help find solutions to help you move forward.

Why Erik Anderson Therapy and Counseling?

Finding the right therapist is one of the most important steps in getting where you want to go with your mental health.  My approach to therapy is based in research on evidence based treatments like exposure and response prevention for OCD and also on practice based evidence like feedback informed therapy.  I’m dedicated to using the best evidence to shape my practice so I can help people feel better and get where they want to go.

I got my MS in counseling from CSU Long Beach and since then I’ve had extensive experience working in group practices treating couples with marital and relationship issues as well as in hospitals, colleges and outpatient treatment programs tackling depression, every presentation of anxiety, and all types of substance use issues.  My background allows me to better connect with you so that I can better support and motivate you as we explore your unique challenges together.  I’m passionate about providing Mar Vista therapy here in our amazing community, and across California via telehealth.
